Laid off

Tips for finding the next job without falling for scams, and for keeping your routine, health insurance and savings steady while you look.

1 Finding the next job

How to get by when you have no money

Don't pay a deposit, don't hand over your ID, don't sign a “training loan” (培训贷), don't join a pyramid scheme (传销), don't borrow at loan-shark rates

An employer cannot hold your ID card, collect a deposit, or collect money under any other name. If an agency did not get you a job, it must refund its fee. Training loans (培训贷), where you pay for training before you can start work, and pyramid schemes (传销), where payment depends on recruiting people, are both scams the authorities have named. For interest above 4 times the one-year LPR (loan prime rate), a court will not support the part above that, but you still repay the principal.

2 Steadying yourself

After a major blow

After losing a job, first fix your daily routine, your medical insurance and your job-search rhythm, and don't stay home all day

Unemployed people are about 60% more likely to die afterward than people with jobs, more so for men and for younger people, and the risk is highest in the first ten years. When the effect of smoking and drinking is subtracted, the increase shrinks by about a quarter, and that part you can manage yourself. First register as unemployed and claim unemployment insurance benefits.

After a major blow

In the first three months after a blow, put off every big decision that can't be undone

In this period your judgment of any “opportunity” is at its worst. In an experiment, sad people were willing to take a little over 10% to a little over 30% less money to avoid waiting 3 months. Put off for three months anything above a month's income or with a high cost of changing your mind. First tell it to someone who has no stake in the matter, and don't decide the same day.

Don't waste your money

Build an emergency fund of 3 to 6 months of living expenses first, and keep it where you can withdraw it at any time

Keep 3 to 6 months of living expenses in a place you can take it out at any time. Then when you lose your job or get sick, you don't have to borrow at high interest, such as by making only the minimum credit card payment, and you don't have to sell your investments at a loss. Money in a bank is covered by deposit insurance, up to 500,000 (50万) CNY at the same bank.
