Delivery riders, ride-hail and truck drivers

Staying alive on the road comes first, then your body: night shifts, heat and sleep apnea.

1 On the road

Don't die early

Wear a helmet on a motorcycle or e-bike, and fasten the strap

Wearing a helmet with the strap fastened lowers a motorcyclist's risk of dying in a crash by about 40%, and of a head injury by about 70%. The strap has to be snug — a helmet dangling loosely on your head doesn't count.

Don't get dragged down: law and property

Don't touch the steering wheel after drinking, including electric bikes and "just moving the car", and don't lend your car to anyone who has been drinking or has no license

Driving after drinking costs you a 6-month license suspension and a fine of 1,000 to 2,000 CNY. A repeat offense brings detention (拘留) and license revocation. Drunken driving (醉驾) means immediate revocation, no retaking the test for 5 years, and criminal liability for the crime of dangerous driving (危险驾驶罪). If you have an accident after drinking, commercial car insurance pays nothing. If you lend your car to someone you know has been drinking or has no license, you will also have to pay part of the damages if there is an accident.

Don't die early

Don't push an e-bike into a stairwell or elevator, and don't charge it at home

Parking an e-bike or charging it in the lobby, corridor or stairwell of a high-rise residential building is expressly banned by a regulation of the Ministry of Emergency Management (应急管理部). If you don't correct it, an individual is fined 500 to 1000 CNY and a business 2000 to 10000 CNY. The fine is the small part. What matters is that this kind of fire starts in your only escape route.

Don't get hurt by the medicine cabinet at home

If you have taken a cold medicine or allergy medicine that contains chlorpheniramine (扑尔敏) or diphenhydramine, don't drive, work at heights or operate machines while taking it

Many combination cold medicines have allergy ingredients such as chlorpheniramine (扑尔敏) or diphenhydramine mixed in, and they make you drowsy. The National Medical Products Administration (国家药监局) advises not to drive, work at heights or operate machines while taking this kind of medicine. On a driving simulator, people who took diphenhydramine drove worse than after drinking alcohol. Not feeling sleepy does not mean you drive without problems.

2 Body

Don't die slowly

The longer you work night shifts, the higher your cardiovascular risk; if you can move to another position, do it sooner

People who work night shifts have about 13% more cardiovascular disease and about 27% more cardiovascular death than people who don't. And it adds up with years: every additional 5 years of night shifts adds about 7% more cardiovascular disease. So count it in years, and if you can move to another position, do it sooner.

Emergencies: what to do first

In high heat, if there is dizziness, nausea, no sweating or confusion, move to a cool place at once, take off clothing and pour water to cool down, don't give water to someone who isn't fully conscious, and call 120 (China's ambulance number)

Skin that is hot and red, slurred speech and confusion are heat stroke. Body temperature can rise above 41 ℃ within 10 to 15 minutes, and the death rate of severe cases is very high. At once move to a cool, ventilated place, take off the clothing, cool with cold water and wet towels, and call 120 (China's ambulance number) at the same time. If the person is not fully conscious, don't give even a sip of water, because it can go down the windpipe.

Don't waste your energy

If you snore loudly, someone has seen you stop breathing in your sleep, or you are so sleepy during the day that you feel like dozing off even while driving, go to a hospital for a sleep study to check for sleep apnea, and if it is moderate to severe, wear a breathing machine at night

Sleep apnea means that after you fall asleep your breathing keeps stopping or getting shallow, you wake up gasping, and you are sleepy during the day. With a breathing machine, daytime sleepiness clearly eases and crashes while driving fall by about 70%. But trials did not find that it prevents heart disease or lets people die less; you wear it to be alert during the day.
